California Establishes New Classification for Electric Dirt BikesCalifornia has enacted new legislation creating a clear off-highway vehicle classification for electric dirt bikes, formally distinguishing them from electric bicycles under state law.Senate Bill 586 established the category of Off-Highway Electric Motorcycle for electric motorcycles built primarily for off-road use and not equipped with pedals. The law took effect January 1, 2026.Under the new framework, off-road electric motorcycles are regulated similarly to gas-powered OHVs.
