Route Information

Route Description/Difficulty: TRS has selected routes that are first and foremost fun. A detailed route information sheet will be provided separate from this communication. There will be active Avenza maps and GPX files. All routes will be ~100 or more miles depending on route choice.

There will be three route maps available for you to choose from. The routes will take the rider through the Patagonia Mountains, and the very scenic San Rafael Valley.

  • Adventure
  • Dual Sport Mild
  • Dual Sport Hard

Three (3) routes:
Note, all mileages as of Sept 25th are preliminary.
Prior to the event you will be provided with a link to the GPS .GPX files, paper maps and a link to Avenza Maps. It is your responsibility to load the .GPX or Avenza map into your navigation device prior to arriving in Patagonia.

Adventure, AKA C, is a mix of paved roads and maintained gravel roads. Lots of great scenery.
Mileages, 85 miles to lunch stop, gas available in Sonoita at about 12 miles into the ride. If you provide a gas can with your gas, TRS will transport it to the Lunch stop at 85 miles. Please put you name and number on the can.
After lunch, 55 miles.

Special, TRS will also provide a turn by turn mileage info for YOU to print a sheet to navigate by if you don’t want to navigate by GPS. And a PDF map for you to print. This is only for the Adventure Route.

Dual Sport Mild, aka B, is a mix of paved roads, maintained gravel roads and some rougher roads. No sand wash, no rock gardens, lots of great scenery.
Mileages, 56 to Lunch and if you provide a gas can with your gas, TRS will transport it to the Lunch stop at 56 miles. Please put you name and number on the can.
After Lunch, 52 miles.

Dual Sport Hard, aka A, is a mix of paved roads, maintained gravel roads and some rougher roads and some really rough roads. Major elevation changes. Some rocks. Even a short section of single track through the manzanita. This section of single track shows as road on the map, it is not. Lots of great scenery.

Mileages, 68 to Lunch and if you provide a gas can with your gas, TRS will transport it to the Lunch stop at 68 miles. Please put you name and number on the can. Gas is Available in Sonoita at about 12 miles into the ride.
After Lunch, 54 miles.

Navigation

GPS Track Files & Avenza Maps: This navigation data will be sent via email to all TWBD participants about a week prior to the event. Questions about the Avenza maps and or GPS tracks can be answered at Check-in. TWBD participants are responsible for loading the Avenza map or GPX tracks into their personal navigation devices. Also be sure to have a handlebar mount for navigation device, such as a RAM mount.

Special Option for TWBD Navigation: In addition to the usual GPX files, TRS will also offer a set of Avenza Maps available through the Avenza Store for free download to all participants. This requires a smart phone with the free Avenza app installed. Then once the routes are finalized, a link to the maps will be provided.

Here is a good tip. Don’t use your high dollar phone for this. Rather, buy a ruggedized phone for about $100 and don’t activate it as a phone. All the downloading of apps and maps can be done via WiFi. I am using this one, Rugged Smartphone Unlocked, Ulefone Armor X6 (2020) IP68 Waterproof Cell Phone, 5.0-inch, Android 9.0 2GB+16GB, 4000mAh Battery, Global 3G Dual SIM, LED Light, Face ID Compass+GPS Shockproof (Orange).

If you are new to Avenza, please watch the Basics training video here. https://www.avenzamaps.com/help/tutorials/

Note that all the Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps are also free on Avenza. And this phone with a GPS application like GAIA provides full navigation capability. All of this is way lower cost than a dedicated GPS unit and with the benefit of a much larger screen.

Petrol

No gas available in Patagonia. Fill up before you arrive. A Shell station is in Sonoita at the intersection of Highways 82 & 83. It is about 12 miles from Patagonia.

TRS can transport your gas can to the San Rafael Ranch House if you need additional fuel to complete the ride. This location is approximately the halfway point of the ride. TRS will transport gas cans to the lunch stop and return them to the check-in area after lunch. So be prepared, bring a full gas can along with you. Please clearly mark your gas can with your name or rider number.

Raffle Prize Party

Will be conducted immediately after dinner ~6:00pm. 1st Raffle ticket is free. Additional tickets can be purchased, 3 for $5, 7 for $10, 20 for $20. The location of the raffle Prize Party will be at the Wild Horse restaurant.

T-Shirts Sales

Due to lead time constants, T-shirt sales close on October 31st. You can purchase them on-line.
Safety – Safety – Safety

THIS IS NOT A RACE! Caution – ALL HIGHWAYS, DIRT ROADS AND TRAILS WILL HAVE TWO WAY TRAFFIC, everything from other bikes, bicycles, cars, trucks, side x sides and cattle. Please use extra caution in route sections with blind corners.  As best you can, stay on your side of the road! STAY RIGHT. You will ride at or below the posted speed limit on the local streets. Caution, the speed limit along Harshaw Road as you leave town is 15 MPH, and is strictly enforced.

Every participant must check-out with a TRS “Crew “volunteer as you leave Patagonia to start your ride, check-in at your lunch stop and check-in again upon completing the ride.

We strongly encourage you to find a riding buddy if you are new to this style of event. Please plan to ride with others, it is not safe to ride alone.

Should you have an emergency call 911. There will be limited sweep rider coverage.

All participants are responsible for their own safety and should ride within in their range of ability. Carry the basic bike repair supplies, water, and a snack to consume along the ride. Because cell coverage is spotty, we strongly recommend a personal satellite communication device such as a Garmin inReach or SPOT type device.

For general assistance you can call these cell phone numbers.  George Wysopal (520)-235-6703 or (312)- 399-3364 others?

Special Requests/Reminders from the Coronado National Forest

  • Riders should ride only on the designated roads or trails.
  • Leave gates how you found them and be aware that cattle may be in the area.
  • To prevent the spread of invasive plants onto the Coronado National Forest, ensure that all vehicles and equipment moved onto the Forest are free of soil, seeds, vegetative matter or other debris that could contain or hold seeds. Wash bikes to remove seeds from invasive species prior to use on the Forest.
  • Please be respectful of other forest visitors.

Respectfully,

The Trial Riders of Southern Arizona
